Legend says that Cyprus is the birthplace of the ancient Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. Certainly the natural beauty of Cyprus adds to this legend. Here though are some important Cyprus facts to help you prepare for your holiday.
Cyprus is the largest island in the eastern Mediterranean. An important Cyprus fact is that it has one of the oldest civilisations of the area, going back some 10,000 years. This history means that Cyprus is like one large open air museum. Conquered throughout the ages, all that came to her shores have left their mark in some way. Some of these marks include the Tomb of the Kings and the Medieval Walls of Nicosia. Within the surrounding areas of Protaras you have the Ayia Napa monastery and the Macronissos tombs, which date back to the Hellenistic and Roman times. Cyprus is steeped in history.
Also well known is Cyprus' amazing coastline. You have a wide variety of beaches to choose from, which incorporate secluded bays to lively resorts, sandy beaches to rocky coves. You will definitely find the right one to suit you. Its expansive coastline means there are plenty of water sports for you to take part in – you decide which one to go for – will it be snorkelling or diving?
There are four large cities – Nicosia the capital, Larnaka, Lemesos and Pafos. They are busy modern commercial and business centres, with old town centres with historical buildings and narrow streets you can browse your way through.
One last fact – if you love animals, then Cyprus has those to. It’s a must for bird watchers as Cyprus is on the migration path between Europe, Asia and Africa. Cyprus also has its own national animal, the Cyprus mouflon which is a kind of wild sheep.
